The Union Catholic baseball team, led by Nick Pellegrino strong outing on the mound and a balanced offensive attack, opened their season by defeating cross-town rival Scotch Plains-Fanwood, 8-3, on Monday at Union Catholic.

Pellegrino, a senior righty, allowed just two earned runs and struck out seven over six innings to earn the victory for the Vikings.

UC took control of the game with three runs in the second and two in the third to take a 5-1 lead. After SPF cut the deficit to 5-3, the Vikings responded with a three-run sixth inning, highlighted by a 2-run triple by sophomore Greg Viloria

Seven players had a hit for UC and six different players knocked in a run for the Vikings.

In addition to Viloria, Chris Wilson, Nick Pellegrino, Nick Anderson, Ryan Gianchiglia and Ryan Bevensee all delivered a hit and drove in a run for UC.

The Vikings also wreaked havoc on the bases with six stolen bases, four by Gianchiglia, and one each by Bevensee and Noah Sosa.
