UC baseball team wins big game over Westfield
The Union Catholic baseball team continued its impressive play with a huge 9-5 win over Westfield on Thursday in Scotch Plains.
With the score tied 5-5, UC scored three runs in the third inning and another run in the fourth inning en route to a 9-5 victory. The Vikings are now 8-3 on the season, 6-0 at home, and 4-1 in the Watchung Division of the Union County Conference.
Westfield opened the scoring in the top of the first with two runs. But the Vikings responded with five runs in the bottom of first inning, scoring five runs on two hits to take the lead, 5-2.
After Westfield tied the game at 5-5, Union Catholic took the lead for good when
Nick Anderson tripled in two runs and
Brian McCabe, who finished with two hits and two runs batted in, followed with a run-scoring single to extend the lead to 8-5.
Ryan Williams earned the win for UC. The right-handed pitcher allowed 10 hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out four and walking one.
McCabe and
Chris Wilson each collected two hits for UC. Anderson went 1-for-2 at the plate and led the team with three runs batted in. McCabe stole two bases. UC ran wild on the base paths, collecting six stolen bases. The Vikings turned one double play in the game and didn't commit a single error in the field.
Greg Viloria had the most chances in the field with six.
Next up for the Vikings is a game at Summit on Friday a 4 p.m.
