UC wins slugest over crosstown rival Scotch Plains-Fanwood

The Union Catholic baseball team jumped out to a big early lead and outlasted crosstown rival Scotch Plains-Fanwood in a 14-9 slugfest on Wednesday at Union Catholic in Scotch Plains.  

In the bottom of the second inning, the Vikings took a 5-0 lead. Luiggi Sacca drove in a run with a fielder's choice, Greg Viloria singled in a run, and Chris Wilson singled in two runs.

The Vikings took a 7-3 lead in the third inning after Brian McCabe hit a sacrifice fly, and Chris Tortorella singled to right, each scoring one run .

Ryan Williams earned the win for Vikings. The starter went four and one-third innings, striking out five and walking two. Tortorella closed out the game for UC, getting the final two outs, including a strikeout to end the game.

UC finished the game with 13 hits.

Tortorella led the way with three runs batted in. Nick Anderson, McCabe, Wilson, Brayden Morrison all collected two hits for Union Catholic, who drew six walks and stole seven bases!

Next up for the Vikings is a game at Oratory Prep on Thursday at 11 a.m..
