Defending county champion Union Catholic continued its winning ways with a dominant 2-0 victory over Plainfield (25-8, 25-14) in the second round of the Union County Tournament.
The Vikings (16-6) were in control from the start, jumping out to a fast lead in the first set and never looking back. Ayla Burke powered the offense with 8 kills and 3 aces, while Alyssa Kenol added 5 kills and 2 blocks. Sabrina Capati and Alex Landazabal ran a crisp attack, combining for 14 assists, with Capati recording 7 assists and 2 digs and Landazabal adding 7 assists, 5 digs, and an ace.
Union Catholic also received strong defensive play from Maria Gialanella (2 aces, 2 digs) and Sienna Mabee (3 digs, 2 kills) as the Vikings totaled 17 kills, 8 aces, and 19 digs on the night.
With the win, Union Catholic — which has now won five straight matches — advances to the quarterfinals, where it will host Rahway on Friday at 4 p.m. in Scotch Plains.
