Luke Schorr honored as nominee for Courage Award
Luke Schorr, a senior guard on Union Catholic's basketball team, had an unforgettable moment on Thursday when he was honored with a certificate recognizing his nomination for the prestigious 2025 Naismith High School Basketball Courage Award.
This nomination was no small feat—it was a recognition of Schorr's extraordinary display of courage, determination, resiliency, leadership, and confidence in the face of adversity.
Schorr suffered a broken nose and required stitches after he was involved in a car accident right before the start of the 2023-24 basketball season. Doctors said he'd miss the first two months of the season, but Schorr's resolve was unshakable as he returned to play with a protective face mask just nine days after the accident. Schorr said he was determined to not allow the injuries derail the start of his career at UC.
"I knew my goal coming to Union Catholic was to play at the highest level, and I wasn't going to let anything stop me," Schorr said, reflecting on the days following the crash. "I couldn't sit out for two months—I had to get back out there and help my team. That's what I came here to do."
Schorr was nominated for the award by Dr. Jennifer Dixon, the Director of School Counseling at Union Catholic.
"I'm humbled by Luke's perseverance, dedication and grit both as a student and as an athlete,'' said Dixon. "He puts the work in each and every day and never looks for an easy out. He truly embodies what it means to be a student athlete. I'm so proud of all he's accomplished and I am confident these qualities will serve him well as he continues his journey after graduation.''
Schorr said he continues to feel the impact from the accident and that he still needs to undergo surgery on his nose.
"I'm not going to lie, I'm still dealing with the effects of the injury," Schorr admitted. "But at this point, I've gotten used to it. I'm just focused on playing and helping my team succeed."
Since the accident, Schorr has put together a memorable career as a Viking.
Schorr recently became just the 12th boy in Union Catholic history to reach the impressive milestone of scoring 1,000 career points when he drained a 3-pointer vs. Plainfield at the Metro Classic at Franklin on Feb. 6 and last year he helped lead the Vikings win their first Union County Championship ever. This season, Schorr is averaging 11.5 points per game for the Vikings, who are 15-9 and ranked No. 11 in the state.
Throughout his time at Union Catholic, Schorr has not only achieved basketball success, but has also experienced growth in all areas of life.
"Coming here was a big step up for me," he said. "It's not just about basketball—it's about friendships, school, and being part of a team. It's been the best decision I've made."
Schorr's accomplishments are not just a testament to his skill, but to his perseverance in overcoming the challenges life threw his way. The 1,000 points, the recognition, and the courage award nomination are all the result of Schorr's strength of character.
