Surging UC girls basketball team wins 4th game in a row

The Union Catholic girls' basketball team secured their fourth consecutive win with a hard-fought 47-44 triumph over Oak Knoll on Friday afternoon in Summit. The win pushed their record to 4-1 on the season, showcasing their resilience and great teamwork.

The game started with Union Catholic dominating the first quarter, jumping out to an early 12-4 lead.  Oak Knoll came roaring back in the second quarter, narrowing the gap with a 14-point effort, cutting Union Catholic's lead to 18-16 at halftime.

Despite the pressure from Oak Knoll, Union Catholic remained composed, with senior Gabrielle Ziegenbalg stepping up big, scoring 17 points and pulling down 4 rebounds. Ziegenbalg's steady hand from beyond the arc—hitting three three-pointers—was crucial in maintaining the UC lead in the second half..

The third quarter saw Union Catholic's offense gain steam again, outscoring Oak Knoll 15-12.

In the final period, Oak Knoll pushed hard to take control, but Union Catholic's defense held firm. The home team was limited to just 14 points in the quarter, as the Vikings stifled their shooting and created key turnovers down the stretch. The Union Catholic defense, led by Hailey Mullaney with 7 assists and 2 steals, was key in preserving the narrow lead.

In addition to Ziegenbalg's team-high 17 points, Emily Mattson also had a big game for the Vikings with 11 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Sophie Peterson contributed 10 points and provided  while also grabbing 5 rebounds and making 2 steals. Senior Lentia Hasan also made her presence felt, finishing with 3 points and 8 rebounds, and Hailey Mullaney and Sabrina Hackett each pulled down seven rebounds..

UC finished the game with 42 rebounds, 10 steals, and seven blocked shots, a testament to their defensive intensity.

Union Catholic will look to continue their winning ways as they head into a road matchup with Summit on Tuesday night.
