UC bowling team has memorable performance at Union County Championships

The Union Catholic bowling team produced a stunning upset that ignited a great run at the Union County Championships at Jersey Lanes in Linden. 

Competing against all the best teams in the county, the Vikings had a monster third game of 874, which was a season-high, in the first round of the county championship to rally from 10th place to sixth place to secure a spot in the final round.   

The standout performance in that third game came from senior Nick Grippo, who rolled a career-high 234 in the third game. David Dudas also had an outstanding day, finishing with a series of 581, which ranked as the ninth-best score of the day. Dudas' consistent performance him a spot in the County Individual Championship Round. The team received further boosts from several other bowlers, who also set career-high marks. Nick Doll rolled a career-high 192, while Nate Thomas stepped up with a career-high 183 in the pivotal third game. Both bowlers were instrumental in helping the team's total score soar, consistently striking and picking up crucial spares when it mattered most. Andrew Compton kept the team steady with a series of 418.

The Vikings followed that up with its biggest win of the season in their first match in the Championship Round, stunning Linden, ranked No. 20 in the state at the time, in three games to advance to the semifinals. The Vikings dropped a hard-fought match to Elizabeth in the semifinals and concluded the tournament by placing a very impressive fourth place in the team standings.             

That's not all.

Dudas finished off the memorable week on the lanes for the Vikings when he finished a very strong eighth with a series of 589, which included games of 191, 194, and 204.
