UC boys win overtime thriller over No. 7 ranked St. Rose
The Union Catholic boys basketball team, ranked No. 8 in the state, got a huge bounce back victory when the Vikings edged No. 7 St. Rose in an overtime thriller at the MXM Showcase on Saturday at Red Bank High in Little Silver.
Coming off a tough upset loss to Westfield on Thursday, UC showed a lot of grit and resiliency by coming back in the fourth quarter to take the lead before St. Rose forced overtime with a late basket to even the score at 55-55.
In overtime, UC received clutch free throws from senior guards AJ Altobelli, who was named MVP of the game after finishing with a team-high 19 points, and Luke Schorr and played lockdown defense to outscore St. Rose, 7-4, in the extra session to secure the huge hard-fought win. In addition to the 19 points by Altobelli, who made several acrobatic layups, UC received 14 points from Yaw Ansong, who made a key steal and layup late in regulation, and Schorr scored 10 points.
Union Catholic (10-4) will be back in action on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at No. 6 ranked Roselle Catholic.
