UC baseball team clinches Mountain Division Championship with win over Brearley
With the Mountain Division Championship at stake in Friday's showdown with Brearley, the Union Catholic baseball team did what they've done best during their recent hot streak as the Vikings combined clutch hitting and strong defense on the way to a 9-6 victory in Scotch Plains.
The victory clinched the Mountain Division title for the first time since 2015, and was the fifth straight win for the surging Vikings, now 14-8 on the season. The win over Brearley was the seventh straight victory by UC in divisional play as the Vikings finished 10-2 vs.divisional opponents. Brearley came into the game with an 8-2 divisional record.
The Vikings jumped out to quick lead in the second inning when they loaded the bases and scored two runs on a throwing error by pitcher Sean Budis.
After Brearley cut the deficit to 2-1 in the fourth inning, UC scored two runs in the fifth and erupted for five runs in the sixth to open a 9-1 lead.
Brearley battled back with 5 runs in the seventh inning to make the final score 9-6.
Greg Viloria had two singles and scored two runs for UC, Nick Pellegrio doubled and tripled and scored twice,
Brian McCabe knocked in a run and scored a run, and
Brayden Morrison, who tripled,
Nick Anderson,
Chris Wilson, and Mikey Pellegrino all drove in runs for UC.
Adrian Rojas struck out seven batters over 6.2 innings to earn the victory for the Vikings, who will seek to run their winning streak to six in a row when they travel to play Metuchen on Saturday night at 7 p.m.
