The Union Catholic softball team took a big step in its pursuit of winning the Valley Division of the Union County Conference with a 9-2 victory over Oak Knoll on Tuesday in Scotch Plans.
Deyalyn Sosa, wh finished with a four runs batted in, ignited a seven-run sixth inning by crushing a two-run homer when the Vikings snapped a 2-2 tie and pulled away for a pivotal win. With the victory, which avenged one of its two losses, the Vikings are now 13-2 overall and are in first-place in the Valley Division with a 5-1 divisional record. If UC defeats Rahway on Thursday and Roselle on Friday, both at home, the Vikings would clinch the division title.
Cameron Kelly continued her torrid season on the mound and at the plate for UC. The junior struck out 10 en route to the complete game victory, and she had three triples, a double and drove in three runs for the Vikings.
Caroline Parker also delivered a clutch two-run double for the Vikings during their big sixth inning.
