UC XC teams sweep titles at Oak Ridge Invitational
Union Catholic's girls and boys cross-country teams, ranked No. 1 and No. 6 in New Jersey respectively, both turned in dominating performances to sweep the team titles at the Oak Ridge Invitational on Friday.
In the girls race, UC, the overwhelming favorite to win a 4th straight Meet of Champions title this season, threw down a perfect score of 15, swept the top six places and jammed nine runners in the top 11. And they did that without a few of their top guns!!
Junior Paige Sheppard, who broke the state record in the mile when she won the New Balance National title last spring and won the XC M of C title last fall, won the race comfortably by running 11:14.5 over the 2.09-mile layout. She was followed by junior Cayleigh Kaiser (2nd, 11:40.1), senior Ella Solorzano (3rd, 12:19.4), freshman Eden Solorzano (4th, 12:23.5), freshman Harper Telesca (5th, 12:24.2), and freshman Abigail Robisky (6th, 12:33.91). Also placing in the top 11 for UC were senior Joelle Ruccio (8th, 12:47.8), sophomore Saffa Ellis (9th, 12:59.2), and freshman Jia Jain (10th, 13:08.1).
On the boys side, UC packed seven runners in the top 10 and finished with just 22 points to secure the team championship. Junior Danny Kuran won the individual title in 10:27.6, with Elijah McCoy right behind him in 2nd (10:33.3). Axl Asaro finished 4th in 10:46.1, Finn Riely was 6th in 10:49.9, Keandre Kelly placed 7th in 10:51.9, Manny Sanchez was 9th in 10:58.3, and Quintin Clemons rounded out the top 10 in 11:00.8.
