No. 18 UC Opens Season With Win as Landazabal Sets School Record
The Union Catholic girls volleyball team, ranked No. 18 in New Jersey and the defending Union County Champion, got its 2025 season off to a winning start on Wednesday in Scotch Plains with an impressive 2–1 victory over Kent Place (25–15, 19–25, 25–12)
The match was highlighted by a historic achievement from senior Alex Landazabal, who broke the school record for career assists. Landazabal finished the match with 13 assists, 12 digs, and 3 aces, pushing her career total to 832 assists. She surpassed the previous school record of 831 assists held by 2019 graduate Emily Jones.
Senior middle blocker Alyssa Kenol (#28) powered the Vikings' offense with a match-high 9 kills and 3 blocks, while Ayla Burke added 7 kills. Junior Sabrina Capati chipped in with 13 assists and 3 digs, and Sienna Mabee provided steady all-around play with 4 kills, 8 digs, and an ace.
Union Catholic came out firing in the opening set, cruising to a 25–15 win. Kent Place responded with a 25–19 victory in the second, but the Vikings regrouped and dominated the deciding set, 25–12, behind strong serving, and great team energy.
