UC volleyball team battles back to stay unbeaten
Union Catholic showed its grit and resiliency by rallying back from a first set loss to defeat Bloomfield in three sets on Thursday.
The Vikings, ranked No. 16 in New Jersey, stumbled early when Bloomfield took the opening set 25-19. It marked the first set Union Catholic has lost in a regular season match this season. But instead of letting momentum slip away, UC responded with focus and determination, tightening its defense and raising the level of its serve-receive game.
Union Catholic dominated the second set, 25-15, using crisp passing and aggressive serving to disrupt Bloomfield's attack. The Vikings then carried that momentum into the decisive third set, pulling away for a 25-18 victory to secure the match and improve to 5-0.
The Vikings were led by Alyssa Kenol, who delivered a match-high 11 kills and 5 blocks at the net. Ayla Burke added 10 kills, while Alex Landazabal continued her strong all-around play with 17 assists, 7 kills, 7 digs, and 2 aces. Sabrina Capati contributed 9 assists and 6 digs, and Maria Gialanella anchored the defense with 10 digs. Sienna Mabee chipped in with 5 kills, 6 digs, and an ace to help fuel the comeback.
Next up for the Vikings is a big showdown with No. 8 ranked Westfield on Monday at UC at 4 p.m.
