UC volleyball team defeats crosstown rival SPF to stay unbeaten
In a showdown between crosstown rivals, Union Catholic, ranked No. 18 in New Jersey, improved to 4-0 with a straight-sets victory over Scotch Plains-Fanwood on Tuesday, 25-23, 25-21.
The Vikings were tested by a resilient SPF squad but delivered in the big moments to keep their perfect start intact.
Freshman Ayla Burke powered UC with 8 kills and 3 blocks, while senior Alex Landazabal ran the offense to perfection, finishing with 12 assists, 7 digs, and 5 kills. Landazabal also added an ace.
Senior Alyssa Kenol and junior Sabrina Capati provided balance at the net and in the back row, combining for 6 kills, 13 digs, and 5 assists. Senior Hannah Buniak was outstanding from the service line with 5 aces, helping UC maintain momentum late in each set.
SPF (0-3) showed fight behind Madelyn Byrne's 6 kills and 10 digs, and Isabelle Stewart's 8 assists and 3 aces, but the Raiders couldn't keep pace with UC's depth and firepower.
