Mattson's 3-pointer at the buzzer gives UC dramatic win over Johnson

Emily Mattson drained a long range 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded to give Union Catholic a thrilling 61-59 victory over Johnson on Tuesday in Scotch Plains.

UC, now 15-4 overall on the season, was trailing 59-58 with six seconds left in the game when Mattson inbounded the ball from underneath her own basket. Mattson passed it to Sophie Peterson, who raced down the court and passed it to Sabrina Hackett, who flipped the ball back to Mattson, who buried the game-winning basket as time expired.

The dramatic victory by Union Catholic capped off a great comeback by the Vikings, who rallied from a 14-point deficit in the third quarter to tie the game at 41-41 heading into te fourth quarter.

Union Catholic's victory gave the Vikings a 7-2 record in the Mountain Division of the Union County Conference, which placed them in first-place by two games with three games to play in the division.

Gabrielle Ziegenbalg led Union Catholic with 23 points to give her 965 points in her career. Hailey Mullaney followed with 13 points, Mattson had 12 points, and Sabrina Hackett grabbed a game-high 15 rebound for UC.
