The Union Catholic boys tennis team continued its historic season by defeating St. Rose, 3-2, in the opening round of the NJSIAA South Jersey, Non-Public Tournament on Friday at Kramer Manor Park in Scotch Plains.

It's the first victory in the state tournament for the seventh-seeded Vikings in several years, and it adds to what has been one of the most memorable and successful seasons in recent years for the program.

The Vikings, who won the Valley Division of the Union County Conference for the first time ever this season, swept the singles matches to clinch the victory over 10th-seeded  St. Rose. Senior Shaan Trehan (first singles), freshman Ryan Bokina (second singles) and sophomore Andrick Charles (third singles) all won in straight sets.

Union Catholic, now 10-6 on the season, will travel to play second-seeded Ranney on Tuesday in the second round of the state tournament. Ranney is 14-3 this season.
