AJ Altobelli scored the final four points of the game to help Union Catholic secure a hard-fought 52-47 victory over Plainfield on Tuesday night in Scotch Plains.
The Vikings, who have won two straight games to improve to 4-3 in the season, were clinging to a 48-47 when Altobelli, a sophomore guard who finished with a team-high 13 points., sank two free throws with five seconds left in the game. He then stole the inbounds pass and was fouled, and again made both foul shots to close out the game.
Yaw Angong, who came up with several clutch rebounds down the stretch, and
Raheem Williams, who made some big free throws in the final quarter, each scored 12 points for the Vikings.
UC will be back in action on Saturday vs. St. Peter's Prep, ranked No. 7 in state, at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Roselle Catholic in the Scholarship Fund for Inner-City Children (SFIC) Hoopfest.
