The Union Catholic softball team bounced back from its first loss of the season earlier in the day with a stunning 4-0 victory over South Plainfield, ranked No. 16 in the state by NJ.com, at the Union Catholic Invitational on Saturday in Scotch Plains.
The Vikings, who fell to Elizabeth 7-0 in its first game on Saturday, received a strong outing from sophomore ace
Justina Benvenuto and clutch hitting from
Sarah Ohnmeiss and Gabby Velona to knock off South Plainfield, the defending state Group 3 champions.
Benvenuto fired a three-hit shutout, walked two and struck out two to improve to 3-1 on the season.
Ohnmeiss drove in two runs for the Vikings (3-1), Velona tripled in a run, and
Megan Sloane and
Autumn Barge each had two hits for the Vikings.
